It’s a wonderful and captivating book — especially considering it was written by someone who was only 13 years old at the time. The illustration commission came from the author’s mother, and the author himself is now around forty.

I truly enjoyed working on this project, as I’ve always loved marine themes.

While developing the image of the girl, I often turned to sketches of my own five-year-old daughter, Yasna, and found inspiration in old photographs of the Baltimore harbor.
